iOS 6 brings a ton of new stuff to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Before you upgrade here are a few things you should know.

First things first: make sure that iTunes is up to date. Launch iTunes. On a Mac, go to “iTunes” then “Check for Updates”. For Windows go to the “Help” menu, then select “Check for Updates”. iTunes current version is 10.7.

With that done you need back up your device before any upgrade. With the device plugged into your computer, Control-click (right-click for Windows) the device in the iTunes source list and choose “Back Up” from the pop-up menu that appears. You can also use iCloud to back up your device. On the iCloud screen, tap “Storage & Backup”, and then tap “Back Up Now”.

Once the update is released keep in mind the sheer number of users all trying to download iOS6 at once. If you see errors or other delays the best thing to do is to wait. Never try to download the update from an untrusted source.
